If pairing a device or technology with a medication can help obesity patients be more successful, we should be open to that. But some of the newer weight-loss approaches fall between the cracks of the regulators: No agency is overseeing them.

It's essential for companies that aren't regulated like the pharmaceutical industry to uphold a standard of transparency and substantiate their claims with evidence. We have to be 100 percent sure that these treatments are safe if we're going to use them. Patient safety is the single top priority with weight-loss medications, as it is with any healthcare treatment.
