Working Mother magazine has named Abbott Park, IL-based Abbott Laboratories and New York-based Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. two of the 10 best employers for mothers. Twelve other pharmaceutical and biotech companies made the magazine's top 100 (see sidebar). Abbott also ranked first among companies in the pharmaceutical industry, while Bristol-Myers Squibb ranked as the company with the best child-care facilities overall.

Tough criteria

Working Mother's 17th annual list of the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" appeared in the magazine's October issue. The list is based upon options and benefits companies provide for child-care support, work flexibility, work-life balance, adoption assistance, and leave for new parents, as well as percentage of women in the work force and advancement of women. The magazine requires companies to send supporting documents such as benefits handbooks and employee surveys.

"We are gratified to receive this recognition for our continued efforts to make Abbott a great place to work," said Miles D. White, chairman and chief executive officer of Abbott. "Our intent is to provide our employees with what they need to excel in their careers and to help them better integrate work and home life. Having successful and satisfied employees enables us to better fulfill our mission of bringing medical advances to patients worldwide." PR
