Mucinex Survey Reveals Americans Only Feel Healthy For Half of Every Month

Article

The survey is part of the brand’s new marketing campaign.

Mucinex revealed the results of a survey asking Americans how often they felt under the weather. It turns out, the average American feels sick or unwell about 15 days out of every month.

This would mean that Americans spend about half of the year not feeling well.

Mucinex announced the results of the survey in a press release that also announced the medication’s new campaign. The “Power of 12” campaign will focus on the drug’s ability to provide relief for 12 hours at a time.

According to the press release, the survey was a random double-opt-in survey that included 2,000 Americans. The participants were split evenly among various generations, including gen Z, millennials, gen x, and baby boomers and was conducted between Dec. 1 and Dec. 5 in 2023. Market research firm OnePoll conducted the survey.

Participants also answered questions related to the causes of their sicknesses (or generally feeling unwell). The top three causes were a lack of sleep, stress, and a viral infection. Over the course of last year, the average survey respondent said that they had cancelled on average eight social events and nine dates due to feeling unwell.

The were some surprising results in the survey, however. While the respondents said that they felt unwell about half of the year, they also said that they only took an average of four days off from work throughout the year due to being sick. One average, respondents lost about $350 from missing work or having to pay for doctor’s visits or medication. Respondents also answered that they generally felt that there weren’t enough hours in the day, which is credited as the reason why respondents still went to work while feeling unwell.

Other factors could impact that, however, such as respondents who work from home may be less likely to call out sick. Also, hourly workers may feel that they can’t afford to miss work. The survey asked participants what they would do if there was more time in the day. Participants from most of the generations generally answered they would use the time to relax. Gen Z, the youngest generation involved in the survey, tended to answer that they would use the time to be more productive.

British-Dutch based company Reckitt owns and produces Mucinex, along with a variety of health and medication products.

In the press release, Reckitt marketing director for upper respiratory brands Albert So says, “These days, our schedules are more packed than ever and we're constantly on the go. That's why a long-lasting symptom reliever like Mucinex 12-Hour is a must-have for any medicine cabinet, especially in the middle of cold and flu season, so you can get back to pursuing your passions, achieving your goals, and spending more quality time with friends and family. Because it provides immediate and extended relief for up to 12 hours, one dose of this powerful formula can help give you quality time back."
