How is Boehringer Ingelheim's Deliberate GLP-1 Strategy Different From Competitors?

Brian Hilberdink, president of U.S. Human Pharma, Boehringer Ingelheim, explains what sets his company's obesity strategy apart in an increasingly crowded field.

Brian Hilberdink, president of U.S. Human Pharma, Boehringer Ingelheim, outlines how Boehringer Ingelheim is positioning its obesity strategy and what differentiates it from competitors.

Hilberdink says the company begins by putting the patient at the center and recognizing the journey people with obesity have been on, including stigma and limited options. Against that backdrop, Boehringer aims to “elevate the focus” on overall metabolic health rather than strictly on weight reduction. Survodutide, the agent they are seeking to bring forward, exemplifies this approach. He describes it as a novel glucagon–GLP-1 dual agonist with the potential to reduce liver fat, decrease harmful visceral fat, and help preserve lean muscle mass, possibly in ways that differ from current therapies.

He goes on to emphasize that the molecule is only part of the strategy. Hilberdink believes pharmacologic therapy alone is insufficient to bring patients to a healthy weight and durable metabolic health. Boehringer is therefore exploring what additional support can surround the patient, reflecting its broader heritage in metabolic health across Type Two diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease.

Hilberdink also notes that the company is not focused on a single modality. In addition to Survodutide, Boehringer is developing a triple agonist that could be first in class, along with other assets in its pipeline.
