Catalent will support Nanoscope’s commercialization of Nanoscope’s MCO-010.

Catalent announced an expanded partnership with Nanoscope Therapeutics, a biotech company developing treatments to restore vision in patients suffering from retinal degeneration.1

The partnership will focus on supporting the late-phase clinical and commercial supply of Nanoscope’s MCO-010, and optogenetic gene therapy. Catalent will provide commercial compliant packaging and distribution for the medication.

Nanoscope has a submission for the drug with FDA underway.

What are the details of the partnership between Catalent and Nanoscope?

In a press release, Catalent’s chief of staff and group president of clinical and specialty services Ricky Hopson said, “Catalent is pleased to expand our collaboration with Nanoscope as MCO-010 advances toward potential commercialization. Catalent is committed to supporting Nanoscope at every stage of the journey to bring this innovative therapy to the market and help make Nanoscope's mission of vision restoration a reality for patients around the globe."

Nanoscope Therapeutics’ co-founder and CEO Sulgana Bhattacharya said in the same press release, “As we continue to manufacture MCO-010 commercial drug product, having a packaging partner who can scale with us to meet the needs of global commercialization is essential. Catalent's expertise and reliability give us confidence as we prepare for the next stage of this journey, and we look forward to continuing this partnership as we work to bring a much-needed treatment option to patients living with retinal degenerative diseases."

Catalent is owned by Novo Holdings, the parent company of Novo Nordisk. Pharmaceutical Executive reported on the purchase in February 2024, when the acquisition was first announced. At the time, it was reported that the deal was worth $16.5 billion.

In a press release issued at the time, Novo Nordisk president and CEO Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen said, “We are very pleased with the agreement to acquire the three Catalent manufacturing sites which will enable us to serve significantly more people living with diabetes and obesity in the future. The acquisition complements the significant investments we are already doing in active pharmaceutical ingredients facilities, and the sites will provide strategic flexibility to our existing supply network.”

What partnerships does Catalent have?

Meanwhile, Catalent’s agreement with Nanoscope is just its latest partnership. In May of this year, the company announced a strategic partnership with Elpida Therapeutics for late-phase AAV manufacturing.2 According to the deal, Catalanet will use its proprietary technology to accelerate the production of R&D and GMP-grade material for SPG50 process valifation.

In a press release issued at the time, Elpida Therapeutics’ founder and chief executive officer Terry Pirovolakis said, “This collaboration with Catalent represents a critical step in ensuring continued patient access to our SPG50 gene therapy program. Without this support, the final patient planned for treatment by the end of this year could have marked the end of this therapy’s availability. Together, we are building a path to reach all patients living with SPG50 and, ultimately, other devastating ultra-rare diseases.”

In the same press release, Catalent’s biologics group president David McErlane added, “This partnership reflects Catalent’s commitment to applying our broad gene therapy manufacturing expertise and Patient First approach to programs with significant unmet need. By leveraging our broad expertise in end-to-end AAV capabilities, we look forward to supporting Elpida’s SPG50 program through late-phase manufacturing so it can advance toward regulatory submission.”
