BioMarin and the n-Lorem Foundation have entered a strategic collaboration and global licensing agreement to develop the first disease-targeted antisense oligonucleotide medicine for ReNU syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder identified as a distinct genetic condition only in 2024. The companies plan to jointly advance an investigational candidate targeting the RNU4-2 genetic variant responsible for an estimated 75 percent of cases. ReNU syndrome is projected to affect roughly 100,000 people globally and currently has no approved treatments addressing its underlying cause. n-Lorem, which typically develops individualized therapies for extremely small patient populations, sought out BioMarin as a partner capable of scaling development for the broader ReNU community.

Several smaller deals moved forward across biotech this week. Oak Hill Bio, a clinical-stage rare disease company, agreed to go public through a combination with RA Capital-backed SPAC Research Alliance Corporation III, a deal expected to provide roughly $175 million to support its Phase III trial of Rugonersen for Angelman syndrome. Apnimed set terms for a $150 million initial public offering ahead of a planned launch of its sleep apnea drug Oxnimbi, which has an FDA new drug application already under review. And CORE Biomedicine closed a $21 million Series A financing to advance its lineage-based precision oncology platform, along with a Japanese government grant supporting its regional research collaborations.

Finally, Wharton professor Patrick Harker, former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, says AI is compressing the traditional advantages of pedigree and analytical work that once defined entry-level hiring at top firms, including in pharma, where the technology has already shortened timelines for target identification and molecule design. He advises MBA graduates to prioritize communication skills, seek candid feedback from mentors, and build relationships beyond their immediate specialty, arguing that the ability to frame the right problem and ask sharper questions is becoming the scarcer, more valuable skill as AI tools level the playing field on technical tasks.
