How can older adults maintain their cognitive abilities?

Health services company Humana announced its first Humana Cognitive Games.1 The event is designed to give older adults both examples of way to exercise their minds while also providing opportunities to participate in events built around those activities.

The virtual event is open through August 11 and includes:

  • Braing-training activities
  • Lifestyle tips
  • Educational content

In a press release, Humana’s president of insurance George Renaudin said, “Healthcare starts long before you step into a doctor’s office––it begins at home with daily choices we make to take care of our bodies and minds. At Humana, we are committed to proactive, preventive care––from wellness checks and screenings to personal healthy habits––that can help improve health outcomes. Because for many Americans, true health means the freedom to live life on their own terms.”

In the same press release, Isabel Souffront, MD, chief medical officer for Conviva Senior Primary Care in Broward County, Florida, added, “You’ve got to exercise your brain. It’s like anything in life. If you can strengthen that muscle, it will help keep you sharp. Trying new things––whether it’s a hobby, an instrument or a puzzle––stimulates the brain and helps protect against mental decline.”

The announcement for the Humana Cognitive Games references a study the health services provider released in June of this year. Conducted in partnership with CenterWell and Morning Consult, the research shows that Americans generally value independence as they get older.2 This remains true even if that means they would live a shorter life.

The survey also revealed that respondents had a generally positive outlook on aging, although they shared concerns over common issues like having enough money saved and an inability to maintain their quality of life.

In a press release issued at the time, Epic vice president Alan Hutchison said, “Navigating healthcare can be complex, especially when information lives in different places. This collaboration aims to make things simpler by bringing care and coverage together for patients.”

In the same press release, chief medical officer for Humana’s primary care organization Vivek Garg, MD, added, “Regular primary care is key to early detection and prevention of chronic disease – especially for seniors and those approaching their later years. It shouldn’t be seen as something you turn to only when you’re sick, but as a vital part of staying well over the long term. Our survey data shows we need to do a better job communicating that value, as well as making it easy to access high quality primary care from health care professionals who take a comprehensive, proactive approach with their patients.”

Humana also recently announced a $500,000 donation to aid recovery efforts in Central Texas following severe flooding that resulted in catastrophic loss of life in the area.3

In a press release, Humana Foundation CEO Tiffany Benjamin said, “Our hearts are torn by the depth of this unimaginable tragedy. The pain and loss felt across Central Texas are profound, and we grieve alongside every family and community affected. Though it’s hard to look ahead to recovery in the face of such overwhelming loss, we remain unwavering in our commitment to help ensure that critical support is available for those who need it.”
