METiS Enters Collaboration with Eli Lilly for Next-Generation Tissue-Specific LNP Delivery Technologies
METiS TechBio enters a collaboration with Eli Lilly to develop next-generation, tissue-specific lipid nanoparticle delivery technologies using METiS’s AI-driven lipid discovery platform.
METiS TechBio announced a strategic collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company focused on researching and discovering novel lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-based delivery solutions designed to enable tissue-specific delivery of therapeutic modalities.
Under the agreement, METiS is eligible to receive an upfront payment in the low double-digit millions of dollars, upwards of approximately $1.1 billion in development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments, and single-digit tiered royalties on annual net sales of any resulting products.1
What will each company contribute?
METiS is expected to apply its proprietary, AI-driven ionizable lipid discovery and optimization platform, AiLNP, to develop next-generation delivery technologies aiming at improving the targeting and biodistribution of LNP-based delivery systems.1 Eli Lilly is set to contribute its drug discovery, development, and commercialization expertise to advance the collaboration.
The companies say combining METiS’s generative and predictive AI capabilities for rational LNP design with Eli Lilly’s scientific and development infrastructure is intended to yield novel LNP architectures with improved tissue specificity, enhanced therapeutic performance, and broader applicability across multiple disease areas.1
Why does delivery technology matter here?
Lipid nanoparticles have become a central modality for delivering therapeutic payloads to target tissues and cells, underpinning everything from mRNA vaccines to gene-editing therapies.2 As the industry moves into more complex modalities, the ability to direct payloads precisely to intended tissues, while minimizing off-target exposure, has become a key bottleneck in translating novel therapeutics into approved products. METiS positions AiLNP as an answer to that bottleneck, using generative AI models, including one referred to as PhatGPT, to generate and optimize lipid candidates computationally rather than through traditional trial-and-error screening.1,2
What is METiS saying about the deal?
METiS frames the collaboration as validation of its AI-driven approach and an opportunity to scale its platform through a partner with substantial development reach. “Delivery remains a critical determinant of therapeutic success, particularly as the industry expands into increasingly sophisticated modalities,” says Chris Lai, chairman and CEO of METiS TechBio. “We are excited to collaborate with Lilly, a global leader in the discovery and development of innovative medicines. By combining METiS’ AI-powered platform with Lilly’s scientific expertise and development capabilities, we aim to unlock a new generation of tissue-targeted delivery technologies that have the potential to transform how medicines reach patients.”
What’s next?
Terms of the agreement were not fully disclosed, including which disease areas or specific programs the collaboration will initially target.1 The deal adds Eli Lilly to a growing list of large pharmaceutical companies turning to AI-native biotechs for delivery innovation, as sponsors look to extend LNP technology beyond its original mRNA vaccine applications into gene therapies, RNA interference, and other emerging modalities.
