Oikos a part of Danone North America, revealed its new yogurt product Oikos Fusion, a first-of-its-kind nutrient dense dairy drink designed to support muscle mass gains and digestive health during weight loss.
Rafael Acevedo, president of yogurt at Danone North America, discussed the importance of the new yogurt drink, saying, "Pairing Danone's decades of science expertise with the Oikos' brand's emphasis on strength and high-quality protein enabled us to create something truly unique for people looking to maintain muscle mass while on a weight loss journey. The growing need for tailored nutrition solutions for people experiencing muscle mass loss is something we can expertly tackle. We know change takes strength and we believe weight loss isn't only about taking things away it's about adding and strengthening routines with nutrient-dense products that help people better meet their goals."1
As GLP-1 medications increase in popularity, with one in four Americans reportedly undergoing a weight loss journey along with another 10% having used GLP-1 medications, healthy and nutritional food options have also become popular amongst consumers today. For many going through a weight loss journey, challenges arise when finding suitable dietary options to help maintain muscle mass without affecting their weight loss, as muscle mass reportedly accounts for 20% of weight loss for GLP-1 users.
Employing this data Oikos, acknowledged the demand for a nutrient rich weight loss friendly product and, employed its experience in producing high protein yogurts to develop its new product Oikos Fusion. The new product was developed as a nutrient dense dairy drink aimed at creating and maintaining muscle mass during weight loss and is the first product positioned to support GLP-1 users with nutritional requirements.
Oikos employed data directly from GLP-1 users to help design the new drink, focusing on providing the most nutrition in a compact size allowing for users to meet daily nutritional needs while still being conscious of portion size. Danone also curated a nutrition hub for GLP-1 users, providing concise and credible information on nutritional requirements on all products in Danone’s portfolio.
Whitney Evans PhD, RD, director of nutrition & scientific affairs at Danone North America touched on the importance of the new product for GLP-1 users, saying, "People on a weight loss journey often eat less, so it's crucial to focus on the nutrient density of the foods they do eat. When protein needs are not met, the body will start breaking down muscle to get the amino acids it needs. Fiber is also important considering its role in digestive health and because most American fall short on fiber intake. That's why we created Oikos Fusion in listening to GLP-1 users and studying the latest research, we packed as much targeted nutrition as possible into a small, delicious, and convenient bottle to help make it easier to meet key nutrition needs."1
Set to hit shelves in August this year, Oikos Fusion will be available for purchase at select retailers, with additional retailers receiving the product later this fall.
