Medtronic released the results of a sponsored survey that asked women between the ages of 30-50-years-old about their health risks.1 According to the results, about 45% of the respondents were unlikely to discuss family health history with their parents.

As a result, Medtronic announced the launch of a new campaign called Letter to My Mother, which encourages women to have these discussions.

Nina Goodheart is a senior vice president and president of structural heart & aortic in the cardiovascular portfolio at Medtronic. In a press release, she said, “The U.S. is at a tipping point when it comes to women's health, and heart health remains the deadliest concern of all. At Medtronic, we're working relentlessly to ensure women receive personalized, evidence-based healthcare solutions, tailored to them. The launch of Letter to My Mother marks another step in our sustained commitment to improving health outcomes for all."

Star Jones, attorney and television personality, is joining the campaign as part of its public face. In the same press release, she said, “As women, we are our own best advocates, but without the confidence, knowledge, or resources to discuss our health history, we are missing out on potential life-saving conversations. I come from a family with a long history of heart disease, yet this was rarely a topic we talked about. If only I had acknowledged my risk for heart disease earlier, I could've potentially addressed my concerns with my cardiologist sooner before it led to needing open-heart surgery. That is why I am speaking out now to get all women talking about this disease and how addressing symptoms could save their life––like it did for me."

Dr. Raven Voora, a hypertension specialist and nephrologist at UNC Health added, “As physicians, we know heart health is not one size fits all. Women have a unique experience with heart disease and risk factors - like high blood pressure during pregnancy which may be the first sign of chronic high blood pressure persisting throughout their lifespan. Too often, I've seen women present with risk factors or early signs of heart disease that they put on the backburner behind care for children and loved ones - or these signs and symptoms get brushed off as stress or anxiety. This survey shows us that patients need increased awareness and discussion surrounding heart health and to make sure they pay attention to their heart health."

In March, Thierry Peiton assumed the position of chief financial officer at Medtronic.2 His appointment was first announced in January of this year. In a press release issued at the time, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer Geoff Martha said, “Thierry is a strategic, creative, operationally focused, experienced CFO with a proven track record of delivering innovation-driven growth, margin improvement, and earnings power through strong financial leadership, which is directly aligned with our financial objectives. We are confident he is the right choice at this important time for Medtronic and can't wait to benefit from his expertise and leadership."

He continued, “I also want to recognize Gary Corona, who has served as interim CFO. Gary helped us deliver revenue growth and EPS that exceeded expectations in our first and second quarters and has provided strong leadership of our Finance function over the last six months. He will help ensure a smooth and successful transition, and I look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role leading several key Corporate finance functions.”
