While men are generally well represented in pharma and health research, men’s health is often overlooked by men in general. June is Men’s Health Month, and several organizations are taking the opportunity to promote important steps that men should be taking (and often aren’t) to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What elements of men's health are often overlooked?

Key Takeaways

  • June is Men's Health Month.
  • Men often overlook important aspects of their health, especially as they get older.
  • Fidelis and Endo are launching campaigns to promote healthy habits and medical options for men.

Fidelis Care announced that it is using Men’s Health Month as an opportunity to promote important health tips that men should follow.1 According to the company, many men don’t pay enough attention to their health and they often make excuses to avoid taking necessary steps to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

In a press release, Fidelis Care physician Dr. Arik Olson said, “It's important for men to have a primary care provider and to get a checkup every year, even if they feel well. Many men don't see a doctor unless they really need to. Men often say they feel fine, are too busy, or will get around to it 'sometime.' It can be difficult to take time to see a doctor just for a checkup even though it can help lead to a healthier, longer life."

Olson continued, “Your doctor is the best expert to guide you through what really works and what is best to avoid. Don't believe what you may read on social media about supplements, body scans, or genetic tests. These can often be scams. Get advice straight from your doctor."

Fidelis suggests that men make sure that they get regular cholesterol and blood tests, annual vaccines, and colon cancer screenings as they get older. Besides these, there are other, easier steps that they can take as well.

"Maintain and build social connections with other people," said Dr. Olson. "This is more important as we get older. Find activities where you can see the same group of people on a regular basis. Get some form of exercise every day. It could be a daily walk, working outside in the garden, a sports group, or time at a gym."

The Future of DTC in Pharma

Dr. Olson added, "As we observe Men's Health Month, my main message is to see your doctor once a year to get their suggestions for what can help you stay healthy. Your doctor can guide you based on their understanding of your conditions and personal health risks."

Endo also announced a men’s health initiative for the month of June.2 Its campaign is focused on promoting awareness of under diagnosed and stigmatized conditions that men suffer from.

In a press release, Endo’s senior vice president and general manager of branded specialty Justin Mattice said, “Men may not always be the strongest advocates for their own health, but with the right information and awareness, we can empower them to take a more active role in their well-being. At Endo, we offer a unique portfolio of men's health products and equip healthcare providers with tools and education so they can support their patients in their health journey."

Endo’s campaign will include targeted digital outreach, providing educational material in healthcare settings, and email campaigns.
