GLP-1s have shown themselves to be effective at promoting weight loss, but some researchers have expressed concern with the drugs. While weight loss is an important step to a healthier life, it’s just one part of the process. It’s important to ensure that the weight lost is primarily excess body fat, and it’s also important to promote a healthy diet to go along with that weight loss.

Key Takeaways

  • GLP-1s are helping people lose weight, but weight loss can be healthy or unhealthy.
  • GLP-1s should be paired with healthy diet habits and proper exercise in order to achieve healthy results.
  • A study by GNC suggests that GLP-1s users are risking malnourishment and muscle loss.

Are people using GLP-1s pairing them with healthy habits?

In order to lose weight, all someone must do is eat less calories than they are burning. However, to achieve the best and healthiest results, a caloric deficit must also be combined with healthy eating habits and proper exercise. Often times, people trying to lose weight focus too much on reducing their food intake. As a result, they end up skinnier, but also risk being malnourished and out-of-shape.

GNC announced the results of a study that analyzed real-world research about the nutritional habits of GLP-1 users.1 According to the results, GLP-1 users often have poor diets that don’t include enough protein and overall nutrients.

In a press release, GNC senior manager of scientific affairs and principal investigator for the study Dr. Brittany Johnson, PhD, RDN, said, “We set out last year to develop a product tailored to the unique needs of GLP-1 users. However, we quickly realized there simply wasn't enough evidence to inform a formula based on our scientific standards. That's why our team decided to start at the foundation and understand exactly what nutritional inadequacies exist in this population."

GNC’s chief merchandising and science officer and EVP Rachel Jones, MS, RDN, said in the same press release, “Science is the foundation for everything we do at GNC. Recognizing the lack of clinical nutritional research among GLP-1 users, we set out to examine their real-world dietary intake and habits to help understand the true nutritional needs. The results of our study provide critical evidence to guide the next generation of support for the growing population of GLP-1 users—whether through education, clinical nutrition advice or dietary supplements."

American Specialty Health Incorporated recently released the results of a similar study that showed comparable results.2

In a press release issued earlier this month, American Specialty Health senior vice president of rehabilitation services and digital self-care solutions Jaynie Bjornaraa, PhD, MPH, PT, explained, “GLP-1 medications seem to be a powerful anti-obesity tool, but they also have an impact on muscle mass and nutrient intake. So, while fitting into that swimsuit may be the goal, people should also consider how to stay fit enough to carry their beach bags and umbrellas to the shore. Especially, if they're going it alone."

She continued, "Long-term weight loss maintenance is often the most challenging aspect of the weight loss journey. Health coaching provides the ongoing support necessary to help individuals stay on track and avoid regaining lost weight. This continuous engagement ensures that the positive effects of GLP-1 medications are sustained over time. For those embarking on their GLP-1 journeys, incorporating health coaching can be an essential component of success."
