Roundup: Boehringer Ingelheim Licenses Six Oncology Programs From Sino Biopharmaceutical, Nxera Licenses EP4 Agonist to AbbVie

Boehringer Ingelheim licenses six preclinical oncology programs from Sino Biopharmaceutical in a deal worth up to $7 billion, while Nxera Pharma licenses its EP4 agonist program for inflammatory bowel disease to AbbVie for up to $1.37 billion.

Two deals this week underscore how central licensing has become to large pharma’s growth strategy as in-house pipelines struggle to keep pace with R&D spending. As Dan Chancellor, Norstella’s VP of thought leadership, told Pharmaceutical Executive in August, large pharma companies are becoming “increasingly reliant on deal-making and sourcing externally” to rejuvenate growth ahead of patent expirations expected to hit roughly $500 billion in sales between 2026 and 2032.

Boehringer Ingelheim and Sino Biopharmaceutical Limited together with its subsidiaries (“SBP Group”), announced a strategic multi-program option and license agreement to advance potential next-generation cancer treatments based on antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) and T-cell engager (TcE) technologies. The agreement is expected to deepen the companies’ existing oncology partnership, combining SBP Group’s early-development platforms with Boehringer Ingelheim’s global oncology expertise.1

The collaboration will cover six biologic preclinical programs with five centering on LaNova Medicines (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., a wholly owned SBP Group subsidiary, and one from Beijing Tide Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., another SBP Group subsidiary.1 Under the agreement, SBP Group will conduct early development, and once agreed clinical milestones are reached, Boehringer Ingelheim hold the ability to exercise options for exclusive development, manufacturing, and commercialization rights outside mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau for four of the programs, and worldwide rights for the remaining two.1

SBP Group will receive upfront and near-term payments of $358 million and is eligible for up to $7 billion in option-exercise, development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments, plus tiered royalties on future product sales.1

“Our partnership with SBP Group brings together complementary science to broaden our development portfolio of antibody-drug conjugates and T-cell engagers. It puts our China strategy into action by connecting innovation from China with our global research and development capabilities,” says Paola Casarosa, member of the board of managing directors and head of the innovation unit at Boehringer Ingelheim. “Together, we aim to accelerate promising therapeutic approaches and create new treatment possibilities for people living with difficult-to-treat cancers worldwide.”

Theresa Tse, chairwoman of SBP Group, frames the deal as validation of the company’s scientific platforms. “Our second partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim marks an important milestone in SBP Group’s international innovation strategy and further validates our scientific capabilities in next-generation oncology,” she says. “By combining our innovative platforms and early-development capabilities with Boehringer Ingelheim’s global oncology expertise, we aim to maximize the potential of these programs and bring innovative treatment options to patients worldwide.”

The agreement builds on Boehringer Ingelheim’s recently opened China R&D Center in Shanghai, which expands the company’s early clinical development and external-innovation capabilities and connects Chinese innovation with its global R&D network.1

Nxera Pharma Licenses EP4 Agonist Program to AbbVie in Deal Worth Up to $1.37 Billion

Nxera Pharma Co., Ltd. Has announced that its subsidiary, Nxera Pharma UK Ltd, is entering an exclusive global license agreement with AbbVie Inc. for Nxera’s EP4 agonist program, including lead candidate NXE0033744, a novel small-molecule EP4 receptor agonist discovered using Nxera’s proprietary NxWave drug discovery platform. Under the agreement, AbbVie is set to receive the exclusive worldwide rights to develop and commercialize NXE0033744 in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).2

As part for the deal, Nxera will receive an upfront payment of $100 million and is eligible for up to an additional $1.37 billion in development and commercial milestone payments, plus tiered royalties on net sales.2 The transaction is subject to customary antitrust clearances, including the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act. Nxera says the upfront payment represents a material positive revenue impact and is expected to be recognized in the fourth quarter of the financial year ending December 31, 2026, subject to agreement with the company’s auditors.2

NXE0033744 is designed to selectively activate EP4 receptors locally in the gastrointestinal tract, inducing anti-inflammatory effects while promoting epithelial barrier homeostasis and mucosal healing—an approach intended to offer a differentiated mechanism from existing IBD treatments. A completed Phase I program, comprising single- and multiple-ascending-dose studies, an ulcerative colitis patient cohort, and an indomethacin challenge cohort, generated data supporting a gut-selective profile and target engagement, with no adverse events of concern reported.

Christopher Cargill, president and CEO of Nxera Pharma, positions the deal as confirmation of the company’s discovery platform. “This agreement with AbbVie marks a milestone in the continued development of NXE0033744 and reflects the potential of our NxWave platform to generate differentiated medicines for significant unmet needs,” he says. “AbbVie is already an important partner to Nxera through our ongoing neuroscience discovery collaboration, and this agreement is a strong vote of confidence in NxWave’s ability to consistently deliver. With its deep expertise and proven track record in immunological diseases, and global clinical development, we believe AbbVie is the ideal partner to advance the program globally and determine whether this biology can translate into measurable, life-changing outcomes for people with IBD.”
