A wave of new partnerships is overtaking the pharma sector and reshaping how large and mid-sized biopharma companies are approaching drug discovery, rare disease development, and market access this week.

Novo Nordisk and AWS launch AI partnership

Novo Nordisk and Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a strategic partnership aiming to accelerate drug discovery and modernize Novo Nordisk's operations through agentic AI and cloud technologies.

As part of the partnership, the two companies have created a co-innovation hub in London, where engineers and scientists from both organizations are using AWS AI technologies alongside Novo Nordisk data and insights to compress the path from drug target to first human dose.1

Novo Nordisk has selected AWS as its preferred cloud provider and strategic AI partner, combining Novo Nordisk's therapeutic knowledge across chronic diseases with AWS's cloud and AI services, secure and scalable infrastructure, and life sciences technologies.1 The collaboration has already produced measurable results, including reduced clinical documentation time and productivity gains for more than 25,000 employees.

The new agreement is expected to use services including Amazon Bio Discovery and Amazon Bedrock to identify drug targets, design new therapies faster, and connect genomic, imaging, and clinical data so early research findings can shape clinical trial design.1 Novo Nordisk will also use Amazon Bedrock AgentCore to drive operational efficiencies through AI agents.

"Partnering with AWS is about making AI a driver of innovation across Novo Nordisk," said Mike Doustdar, president and CEO of Novo Nordisk. "By combining our scientific expertise with AWS' tools and purpose-built services for the life sciences industry, while also creating a dedicated co-innovation hub within our existing facility in London, we are accelerating discovery and developing responsible AI solutions that will create real progress for people living with serious chronic diseases."

Innate and Sobi partner on confirmatory trial

Innate Pharma and Swedish Orphan Biovitrum, known as Sobi, announced a strategic partnership to enable initiation of the Tellomak-3 confirmatory Phase III study in cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, a key step toward filing for accelerated approval of lacutamab in Sézary syndrome.2

Under terms of the agreement, Sobi will pay Innate Pharma $75 million at closing, with Innate being eligible for upwards of $40 million dollars tied to near-term development milestones connected to Sézary syndrome, plus up to $465 million related to Sobi's option to acquire full development rights and to future regulatory and commercial milestones.2 As part of the deal, Innate will also receive tiered double-digit royalties on net sales, with the closing being subject to customary conditions, including antitrust clearance.2

Following the deal, Innate will conduct the Tellomak-3 Phase III confirmatory trial to support its planned accelerated approval filing in Sézary syndrome.2 The study is expected to subsequently support applications for full approvals in key jurisdictions in Sézary syndrome and mycosis fungoides, CTCL's most common subtype.2 Sobi will then receive exclusive global rights to commercialize lacutamab upon potential accelerated approval and will also be eligible to assume full global development rights following positive Phase III results.2

"We are thrilled to partner with Sobi and enable Tellomak-3 initiation, the pivotal next step in advancing lacutamab toward a potential accelerated approval in Sézary syndrome," said Jonathan Dickinson, CEO of Innate Pharma. "Sobi is the ideal partner to help unlock the full potential of lacutamab. Their expertise in rare diseases, proven commercial capabilities and global reach perfectly complement Innate's expertise in CTCL clinical development. Together, we share the ambition to bring lacutamab to patients globally as quickly as possible."

Innovent and Daiichi Sankyo strike commercialization deal

Innovent Biologics and Daiichi Sankyo entered an exclusive agreement for the commercialization of Vanflyta, or quizartinib, in China. As stated in the deal, Daiichi Sankyo will handle development, manufacturing, and supply of Vanflyta, while Innovent will hold sole commercialization rights and is expected to lead market promotion in the country.3

Vanflyta is already approved in China for use in combination with standard cytarabine and anthracycline induction and cytarabine consolidation. It is also approved for use as a maintenance monotherapy following consolidation chemotherapy, for adult patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia that is FLT3-ITD positive as detected by an adequate validated diagnostic test, based on results from the Quantum-First trial.3

"This collaboration with Daiichi Sankyo represents an exciting milestone for our hematology franchise. Innovent has continued to expand its product footprint in this field, building a diversified portfolio and strong market presence including Tyvyt (sintilimab injection), Halpryza (rituximab injection), olverembatinib, Fucaso (equecabtagene autoleucel injection), Jaypirca (pirtobrutinib), and the addition of Vanflyta will further enhance our synergistic offerings," said Vivian Zhang, executive director, chief commercial officer of Innovent Biologics. "Vanflyta will be the 20th product in Innovent's commercialized product portfolio. Through collaborative efforts, we aim to bring forward innovative medicines to benefit patients with cancer and further strengthen our leadership in oncology.
