What nine companies joined the MFN program?
The nine manufacturers announced today are mid-sized pharmaceutical companies and include the following;
- Alcon
- Astellas Pharma
- BeOne Medicines
- BridgeBio
- CSL
- Kyowa Kirin
- Sun Pharma
- Teva Pharmaceuticals
- UCB
The agreements are expected to reduce prices on drugs that treat numerous costly, chronic, and even rare diseases, including hemophilia, Parkinson’s disease, macular degeneration, glaucoma, liver disease, skin conditions, and various forms of cancer.1 According to The White House, the agreements will provide every state Medicaid program in the country access to MFN drug prices on products made by the nine companies, which is expected to result in billions of dollars in savings for Americans.1 A fact sheet from the White House frames the nine deals as part of an effort to ensure foreign nations can no longer use price controls to “free-ride” on American innovation, by guaranteeing MFN prices on all new innovative medicines the nine companies bring to market.1
Each manufacturer has agreed to what the administration calls a fundamental rebalancing of international drug pricing by providing MFN pricing to American patients.1
What's changing in the supply chain?
Beyond pricing, the nine manufacturers also committed to invest at least $19.6 billion collectively in U.S. manufacturing in the near term, while several companies are also donating active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for key products to the Strategic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Reserve, intended to reduce reliance on foreign nations and ensure the U.S. has an adequate supply of such products in the event of an emergency.
UCB is set to contribute 163 tons of levetiracetam, an anticonvulsant used to control and prevent certain types of seizures, Sun Pharma will contribute 71.4 tons of clindamycin and 6.75 tons of doxycycline, both antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections, Teva Pharmaceuticals will contribute 45 metric tons of metronidazole, an antibiotic and antiprotozoal used to treat certain bacterial and parasitic infections, along with 4.8 tons of amlodipine, an antihypertensive drug, and Astellas will contribute 25 kg of tacrolimus, an immunosuppressant used to prevent organ rejection in people who have had organ transplants.1

"Patient out-of-pocket costs in Medicaid are not much of an issue. Typically, patients are paying anywhere between $4 and $8 at the pharmacy counter for their prescription drugs. There's not an impact on patient out-of-pocket costs or patient access, necessarily. In the Medicaid program with these voluntary deals, the impact is felt squarely on the manufacturers specifically," said Lindsay Bealor Greenleaf, head of market access policy strategy at ADVI,
