TrumpRx Is Live and Complicated
Key Takeaways
- TrumpRx operationalizes most-favored-nation pricing largely via coupon cards redeemable at pharmacies or through manufacturer DTC channels, with specialty drugs sometimes limited to mail order or direct fulfillment.
- Eligibility commonly requires U.S. residency plus attestations of no enrollment in government-funded coverage and no intent to seek insurance reimbursement; discounted spend does not apply to deductibles.
The site offers users coupons for a limited number of medications that can be redeemed at pharmacies and/or manufacturer DTC sites.
After months of speculation, TrumpRx is live and offering Americans a variety of important medications at most-favored-nation prices.1 Or, more accurately, it’s providing coupons for certain qualifying Americans to use at pharmacies.
President Trump announced on Thursday night that TrumpRx is active at a White House event. He told gathered reporters that Americans were going to “save a fortune and this is also so good for overall health care,” CNBC reports.2
While there was speculation that the site would be a government-DTC site where Americans could purchase medicine directly, the actual site is more complicated. Instead of selling medications, it instead offers coupons that users can at pharmacies or at the drugmakers’ own DTC pharmacies.
How does TrumpRx work?
For example, the website offers a coupon for Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill. According to the site, the original price (or list price) for 30 1.5 mg tablets is $1,349.02. Through TrumpRx, qualifying users can obtain a coupon that reduces the price to $149. The same price is available for 30 4 mg tablets, however, the website notes that this is a limited time offer that will only be available until April 15, 2026, at which point the price will increase to $199 per month.
In order to qualify for the coupon, users must be residents of the United States and must also confirm that they are not enrolled in any government, state, or federally funded medical or prescription programs. They must also confirm that they do not plan to seek reimbursement from any insurance plans for out-of-pocket costs.
The site also notes that cost of the medication will not be included towards any deductibles.
It’s also important to note that not all medications listed on the site have the same restrictions. For example, customers seeking Duavee pills can simply print out the coupon to get $202 dose of the medication for just $30.30.
As of Thursday night, only 43 different medications are listed on the website.
The website also includes an FAQ section, where it explains how pharmacies should handle prescriptions for medications listed on TrumpRx. According to the site, “There are two pathways how manufacturers can make available discounted prices. For some drugs, TrumpRx lists coupon cards. These coupon cards can be used at local pharmacies on a nationwide basis, with the exception of certain specialty medicines. For other drugs, there are no coupon cards, and the discounted pricing is currently only available through the manufacturer's own direct-to-consumer website or through a limited set of mail order pharmacies.”
Under a question asking about payments for the filling of prescriptions involved with TrumpRx, the answer reads, “TrumpRx does not change how pharmacies are paid. Payment to the pharmacy will depend on how each manufacturer chooses to provide its discounted pricing.”
Since the site was first announced late last year, 16
Initially, the President issued an executive order last year demanding that pharmaceutical companies offer medications at most-favored-nation pricing (or, set prices as-low-as or lower than other major regions in the world). After months of negotiations, President Trump announced TrumpRx and began announcing deals with major pharma companies.
Based on these deals, it appears that major pharma companies were able to avoid having tariffs placed on their goods in exchange for participating on TrumpRx.
